After attending Ever After Music Festival last year and loving it, despite the torrential downpour, I was excited to participate in the madness and cool festival vibes once again. As soon as I entered the festival, it was as if I had fallen into an Alice in Wonderland wormhole, with giant inflatable mushrooms, igloos, and cats littering the grounds. At music festivals, you expect raver kids, but Ever After is always such a mix of people, so there are interesting folks and scandalous outfits to look at in every direction. I always find that this makes the festival an experience, in addition to going to listen to your favourite DJ.
We started the day off right on these inflatable chairs that were located right underneath the mushrooms. It was the perfect spot to hangout, wait for our favourite sets, and get to know the people attending the festival. Next, we made our way onto the Wipeout-like obstacle course to watch participants fall their way through the course in the hopes of winning $1000. It was certainly entertaining to watch human beings run through a hamster wheel, while being attacked by sumo wrestlers. That was a sight I will not forget…
Ghastly put on an amazing show right near dinner time, making us dance and shuffle until hunger was no longer a feeling. His set really stood out, because he was able to work up the crowd and encourage people loitering in the festival sidelines to join in. Marshmello was another crowd favourite, as he literally roasted the crowd with his mello beats. Mixing crowd favourites including Justin Bieber’s hit “Where Are You Now,” this DJ knew how to get the crowd dancing.
With so many amazing sets to listen to all day, Gwen and I had a difficult time electing our favourite DJ. But, we both came to the conclusion that RL Grimes took the party to another level. With a lengthy set, people standing on shoulders in the crowd, and crazy drops mixing trap, trance, and the like – RL Grimes catapulted the crowd to an alternative universe. Quite literally, my head was spinning and my ears were ringing after his set, and everyone couldn’t get enough of it.
In the midst of all of the music, I had a quiet nap on the grass, my head strewn among the many ravers around me, with a young girl playing bongo drums behind me. It felt like a dreamland; one where I could truly feel like a kid again. I guess that’s the point of these festivals right?
The food was also amazing! We both purchased a delicious poutine and a beaver tail (so Canadian I know) and sprawled out on the grass, having our very own EDM picnic. If you’re into people watching, this festival was definitely the place to go. Ravers take cosplay to the next level with jester costumes, dragons, tutus, and penguin onesies (I don’t know how this person survived the heat)!
As the darkness began to coat the festival, and the lights on the inflatables brightened, Adventure Club took the stage. I have never seen a crowd rage the way this one did, as I stood to the side and photographed the madness. Of course, I had to join in and become a part of something so great! The rain began to fall and the music moved the rain in a thousand directions, with the sound of dubstep blasting through the speakers. Gwen and I could both feel the bass in our chest, and the feeling was like no other.
Overall, Ever After was definitely a huge success this year. The bad weather didn’t last too long, and the festival really came together with an amazing line-up, and many different activities and sights to engage with. Ever After is making its mark as a top Canadian music festival to attend, and if you didn’t, you should definitely be one with the buzz next year!
